Section 504

Contact information: 504@k12.dc.gov

Section 504 is a law that protects people with disabilities. The 504 program makes sure that students with disabilities get the supports they need through a 504 plan. The goal is to provide a level playing field. DCPS students cannot have a 504 plan and an IEP at the same time.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a 504 plan, a student must have a medical or mental health condition. A medical diagnosis is not needed. That condition must also impact them significantly. Eligibility decisions are made by the school 504 team. If you have any questions, please reach out to the school 504 coordinator.

504 Plan Meeting

Annual Review

Parents and guardians should let the school know if they think their child has a disability and needs support. They can tell the school 504 coordinator by sending an email or talking on the phone or in person.

Once the school gets the request, the 504 team will schedule the 504 meeting. They will also ask the parent or guardian for any information on the condition.

During the 504 meeting, the team will look at all the information available and figure out if the student is eligible.

If so, they will write a plan called a 504 plan. This plan will include the supports the student needs.

The 504 team will meet once a year to check the student's 504 plan and see if any changes are needed. They will also decide every three years if the student still qualifies for the 504 program.
