Home and Hospital Instruction Program

The DCPS Home and Hospital Instruction Program (HHIP) helps students who cannot go to school because of health problems. The health problems can be physical or mental, and they can be short-term or long-term. They can also happen occasionally but make the student miss school for two weeks or more. The HHIP program gives students extra help with their schoolwork at home or in the hospital. Any student who needs this help can get it, not just students with disabilities.

For more information about the HHIP Parent Guidebook please visit this the link below:

To get HHIP services, students must meet these requirements:

  • They need to go to a DCPS school or a nonpublic school where DCPS placed the child.

  • The length of absence from school must be two (2) weeks or more.

  • Students diagnosed with a chronic illness may be eligible for support if they have experienced intermittent absences equal to or more than two weeks of instruction.

DCPS school staff can help families fill out the forms to get HHIP services. The school staff will give families the HHIP documents they need to fill out. Please refer to this link: https://dcpsspecialed.wixsite.com/home/home-and-hospital-instruction-program

Instructional Model

HHIP services help students stay connected to their classes and learn at their own pace. The school staff and HHIP teacher will work together to make a plan that matches the student’s school schedule. They will also think about the student’s medical appointments and avoid any problems with timing. HHIP services can be different for each student to make sure they can keep learning as much as they can.

HHIP Related Services

The school will keep giving them help and related services that students need and can tolerate given their health and have a right to get based on their IEP or 504 Plan. The people who give this help will work with the doctors and nurses who take care of the student to figure out what is best for them. They will consider the student's health and what they can do safely.

Transition to School Support

The school will work with the student's family and doctors to help the student come back to school. The school will make a plan that helps the student do well in school. The plan will have things that the student needs to learn and be comfortable. The plan may change the 504 Plan or IEP to have new things and services for the student.
