Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHOH)

Email: Anna.Chirighin@k12.dc.gov

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHOH) team helps students who have hearing loss by giving them special instruction and resources. This team makes sure that these students can fully access their education. Teachers of the Deaf help students learn and develop their language skills. They also have ASL interpreters. These interpreters help students understand what is being said in class by using American Sign Language (ASL). The DHOH team helps students build their academic skills, communication skills, and social skills. Some students use spoken language, some use sign language, and others use both. By working together with families, teachers, and other experts, the DHOH team helps students reach their goals, join in with their classmates and be part of their school community.

The vision team helps students who have vision loss by giving them special instruction and resources. This team makes sure that these students can fully access their education. The vision team has different members, including teachers who work with visually impaired students.  The vision team looks at each student’s individual needs to help them learn academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills. There are also instructors who teach students how to move around safely and independently. Students can use braille and other materials that are adapted for their learning.  This support helps students become more independent and confident. The vision team works closely with families, teachers, and specialists. This teamwork ensures that students get the tools and strategies they need to succeed in school and in life.
